Abstract

The 2006 earthquake had a significant impact on the education sector, severely damaging 169 elementary schools in Bantul and affecting 198 students. As children are particularly vulnerable to post-traumatic stress following disasters, efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness from an early age are essential. This study applied the tabletop disaster method as an educational medium for fifth-grade students, aiming to improve their knowledge and attitudes toward disaster preparedness through an engaging and enjoyable learning approach. The research was conducted using a quantitative pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test approach involving all 53 fifth-grade students at SD BOPKRI Gondolayu Yogyakarta. Data were collected before and after the intervention and analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. Most respondents were 11 years old, and the majority were male. The analysis showed a mean difference of 0.25 with a p-value of 0.001, indicating a statistically significant improvement after the intervention. These findings demonstrate that education using tabletop disaster media has a significant positive effect on the level of knowledge and disaster preparedness attitudes of fifth-grade students at SD BOPKRI Gondolayu Yogyakarta.
