First-year nursing students are generally in the late adolescent stage, which is vulnerable to social pressure and decreased self-esteem. Social appearance is an important aspect of the interaction process, and negative perceptions of appearance can affect self-esteem. This study aims to determine the relationship between self-esteem and social appearance in students of the Nursing Study Program, Faculty of Health Sciences, Universitas Muhammadiyah Jember, class of 2024. This research used a correlational design, quantitative method, and a cross-sectional approach. The sampling technique used was proportionate stratified random sampling with a total of 119 student respondents. The instruments used were the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) and the Multidimensional Body Self-Relations Questionnaire Appearance Scale (MBSRQAS). Data were analyzed using the Spearman Rho test with a significance level of α ≤ 0.05. The results showed that the majority of students had moderate self-esteem (86.6%) and moderate social appearance (77.3%). The correlation test showed a p-value of 0.000 (< 0.05) and a correlation coefficient of r = 0.475. There is a significant positive relationship between self-esteem and social performance of students with moderate relationship strength. Students are expected to pay more attention to and develop a positive self-concept and body image through self-reflection, maintaining mental health, and avoiding excessive social comparison.
