Abstract

Population growth can be controlled through family planning programs. The injectable
contraceptive method is still the prima donna in family planning programs. In addition to
its effective function in preventing pregnancy, injectable contraceptives are thought to have side
effects, namely weight gain in users, which contributes to changes in body mass index. The
purpose of this study was to determine the difference in BMI between 1-month injection
acceptors and 3-month injection acceptors. The research design used cross sectional.
Population The population of this study was all family planning acceptors of combined pills
and DMPA injections totaling 98 acceptors. The sampling technique used purposive
sampling. The research sample was 54 respondents. The analysis test used the Independent
T-Test test. The test results obtained a p-value of 0.000 means that there is a significant
difference in BMI between 1-month contraceptive acceptors and 3-month contraceptive
acceptors. The average BMI of 3-month injectable acceptors is higher than the BMI of 1-
month acceptors. This difference may be due to the use of 3-month injections containing more
progesterone than 1-month injections. This is associated with the effects of progesterone in
several mechanisms, namely the process of metabolizing carbohydrates into fat, modulating
appetite control and causing a decrease in estrogen in the body.
